The express mission and purpose of the message of the great prophets and messengers of God, peace be upon them all, throughout history has been but to guide human beings to truth, to light and to life.

Just as the body requires sustenance, so too does the soul of the human being, and the sustenance of the soul is light. When light is lacking in the human heart, it begins to die. Yet when light is consistently cultivated and attracted, the heart increasingly comes to life and becomes buoyant, at peace, healthy and whole. Thus one becomes illuminated or enlightened.

The Difference Between the Living and the Dead

The means through which we nourish and sustain our souls is through the remembrance of God, or dhikr. It is for this reason that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the last and final of God’s great messengers and prophets to humanity, stated, “The difference between they who remember God and they who do not is as the difference between the the living and the dead.”

The difference between they who remember their Lord and they who do not is as the difference between the the living and the dead.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ [Bukhari, Muslim]

It is too easy in the modern world to become subsumed in a reality devoid of the remembrance of God, and this leads to increasing dis-ease, depression and the loss of purpose.

Therefore, it is essential for us as human beings seeking both life and awakening to both consciously remember God consistently and to increasingly surround ourselves in the company of they who remember God often.

By building our lives around and upon the remembrance of our Lord and Creator, by His divine mercy we will be protected from the inevitable sleep, slumber and state of unconsciousness that results when our focus is constrained to but the world.

Thus saith Allah Almighty in the Holy Qur’an, “Verily, in the remembrance of God do hearts find satisfaction.”

Verily, Allah leaves to go astray whom He will and guides unto Himself they who repent, they who believe and whose hearts find assurance in the remembrance of God. Verily, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest.

Surah ar-Ra’d [Holy Qur’an, 13:27-28]

To your divine and eternal success.
